As Lunar New Year draws near, this is the time for people to return to their roots — and dignifying one’s worship space while upholding these sacred rites is a spiritual practice deeply infused with the humanistic spirit of the Vietnamese people.

Amid the joyful atmosphere of the approaching Tết and the arrival of Spring, Diệu Tướng Am was delighted to welcome Venerable Thích Tiến Đạt and a gathering of Buddhist devotees to the talkshow “Understanding Home Worship Rituals and Key Considerations from a Buddhist Perspective.” The program was proudly supported and filmed by Diệu Tướng Am at the Diệu Tướng Am Buddhist Cultural and Artistic Space.

Opening the program, Venerable Thích Tiến Đạt shared insights into the profound significance of home worship traditions for the Vietnamese people. Far more than a beautiful custom passed down through thousands of years, this practice is also a way of expressing gratitude, filial devotion, and reverence toward one’s ancestors. This is why every Vietnamese household, regardless of size, keeps a family altar — for the worship space remains the most important and sacred place within a home.

According to folk beliefs and feng shui principles, choosing the right location for a worship space is of great importance, and the altar itself should be placed in the most solemn and dignified spot in the home. Many people go further, considering how the altar’s orientation aligns with the homeowner’s age and feng shui, believing this brings family happiness, smooth fortune, and prosperity. When asked about this, Venerable Thích Tiến Đạt offered his own perspective on the matter.

Arranging the altar with dignity is meant to express sincere reverence, and many sources also describe specific principles for arranging offerings. Because of this, Buddhist devotees are often deeply concerned about getting it “right” and “complete.” In his sharing, the Venerable offered several helpful notes to ease the concerns many people carry regarding this matter.

When asked about the principles behind offering flowers and water, lighting incense, and the number of incense bowls placed on the altar, the Venerable explained each belief in turn, helping the attending Buddhists gain a clearer understanding.
Many believe that offerings need not be lavish or elaborate — sincerity of heart is what truly matters. Alongside this, the practice of combining Buddha worship with ancestral worship has also become an integral part of Vietnamese altar culture. Venerable Thích Tiến Đạt shared his views on this topic, helping everyone gain a deeper understanding of worship culture from a Buddhist perspective, and thereby practice their home rituals with greater diligence and mindfulness.

Buddhism arrived in Vietnam long ago, and over the course of history, the Dharma has woven itself into the customs, beliefs, culture, and worldview of the Vietnamese people. This is clearly reflected in ritual practices. Toward the end of the talkshow, the Venerable spoke further on this theme, offering guidance on how to harmonize these two elements without falling into superstition.

The program closed with a lively and engaging Q&A session between Venerable Thích Tiến Đạt and the attending Buddhists. The Venerable and his fellow guests also expressed their heartfelt appreciation after experiencing the serene, joyful spaces of Diệu Tướng Am and receiving the warm, meticulous hospitality of the Diệu Tướng Am team.

The program will be broadcast at the earliest opportunity. We warmly invite you to follow the Diệu Tướng Am fanpage to catch the release, and to visit Diệu Tướng Am to experience these blessed spiritual spaces as you welcome a peaceful new year.
